Health Care Overview

Continued lack of investment in state-owned hospitals and the increasing incidence of lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes means the trend towards more private healthcare is on the rise.

The average life expectancy in India is 70 years. Indian health authorities estimate that over 2.5m people were infected with HIV/AIDS in 2007. India is second only to South Africa in terms of the number of people living with the disease. Moreover, only 7% of those people have access to treatment. Malnourishment and communicable diseases are also serious problems.
