Surgery

Students/Residents rotating through surgery at Elective International are advised to focus on:

  • Appreciating important aspects of Anaesthesiology and pre-surgical risk assessment e.g. Goldman’s criteria, coagulopathies, ASA classification etc

  • Providing a relevant pre-surgical history and performing a physical examination as it relates to the presenting surgical condition.

  • Preoperative imaging interpretation to aid in diagnoses.

  • Generating appropriate differential diagnoses and developing a proper management plan.

  • Planning for post-operative rehabilitation and follow up care e.g. colostomy care, fluid and electrolyte management, management of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt etc.

  • Management of an acute trauma patient, using up to date ABCD protocols

  • Nasogastric tube placement

  • Urinary catheterization through urethral catheterization or after a performance of a suprapubic cystostomy.

  • Performance and assisting of different surgeries especially of the common conditions encountered e.g. gastrectomies, hemicolectomies, explorative laparotomies, peritoneal toilets, colostomies, splenectomies, cholecystectomies, herniorrhaphies, hydrocelectomies, amputations, incision and drainage, craniotomies, thyroidectomies, tracheostomies, escharotomies, skin grafts, flaps etc.

  • Performance of minor procedures under local anaesthesia: A favorite for most participants is time spent in minor theater where they perform various procedures under supervision e.g. incision and drainage, chest tube insertion, ganglion removal, excision biopsies, breast mass removal, management of various wounds, debridement, and practice of suturing techniques e.g.  interrupted, continuous, mattress, purse string, locking etc.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Mark Thomas, New York Universtiy - Dental, Indonesia

I gained so much experience and confidence after working with EI. Managed to rotate in all departments ranging from Oral Surgery to Endodontic, Prosthodontics to Pediatric Dentistry.

Mary Fields, University of Southampton - Midwifery, Kenya

Elective International has a great program in Kenya, hands down. I wasn’t expecting to get nearly as much work as I did but was in for a shock.  The midwifery program exposed me to so much I wouldn’t have learned if I hadn’t chosen Kenya as an elective destination.

Anne Riordan, University of Dublin - Medicine Elective

The EI staff is a friendly and supportive bunch who do a first-rate job of making sure people like myself who don’t travel a lot feel right at home.
