Your Questions, Answered
Frequently asked questions
I’m already at university, can I still go?
Yes. Our program is designed to give insight into practical healthcare for students prior to clinical training, so it is perfect for those on a pre-med track at university.
How old must I be to do a placement?
If you're over the age of 18, you're old enough. If you’re a IB1 (standard 12) or IB2 (standard 13) once again you’re old enough. However If you are under 18 when you apply, we will also need a consent from your parent or guardian.
I’m not from the US, can I still do this?
Yes. We welcome students from anywhere in the world, provided you are
able to obtain the appropriate visa for the placement country.
When can I go?
As long as we have space on the program, you can go whenever you like. Our programs run year-round, but spaces at our busiest times (especially May to August) usually get booked up many months in advance.
How long should I go for?
For Pre-Medical we have a Fixed 7 day Program. But for the other programs, you can pick your heart away in the Duration of your stay.
Do I need to speak another language?
No. All of the mentors in our hospitals, staff in our houses and other students all speak English.
Can I travel with friends?
Most of our students travel alone. The nice thing about our Elective houses is that each creates a great social atmosphere; the students all share a common interest in healthcare, so it's nice and easy to make friends! And of course you can travel with friends, too. As long as we have space in the house, we can also ensure your group share the same room.
How much does it cost?
It depends where you go, what program you pick and how long you go for. Everything you need to know is on our prices page.
Does the Price Include Flights?
No. Students join us from all over the world, so including flights, as part of our package wouldn’t be practical. You’re also likely to get the best deal by shopping around online or with travel agents, as airfares can change on an almost daily basis.
What's included in the price?
Our prices include your hospital placement, global health Seminar, accommodation, food, airport transfer on arrival, transport to and from the hospital, local orientation, in-country support, help with your preparations and your online trip planner. There’s more detail about all of these on our website.
What else do I need to budget for?
You’ll also need your international flights, personal travel insurance, visa (for some destinations) and personal spending money for things personal expenditures like travelling on the weekends and buying souvenirs. We'll give you all the information you need on budgeting and how to carry your money as part of our pre-departure service.
Is the registration fee refundable?
If we cannot provide you with a placement with the dates and destination you choose, we will offer you the choice of alternatives or a full refund of the registration fee. Once your placement is confirmed, however, the registration fee is not refundable because it is used to hold your place (which could mean turning other students away) and subsidize all of our pre-departure services
When should I register?
Registering for our programs is simple using the application form and the registration fee payment. Our programs are busiest during vacation periods such as Spring break, winter break and May through August. To get your preferred dates and destination, we'd suggest you confirm your space as soon as you know to give you enough time to obtain a visa and undertake adequate preparations for your trip.
