Internal Medicine

Participants in the Internal Medicine rotation at Elective International are advised to focus on:

  1. Aspects of the relevant medical history

  2. Performance of correct physical examination

  3. Proactively assist and carry outward procedures under supervision e.g. I.V. cannulation, phlebotomy, lumbar punctures, bone marrow aspiration, pericardiocentesis, pleurocentesis, ascitic tap, skin biopsies etc.

  4. Analysis, synthesis, and integration of pertinent patient data

  5. Applying knowledge of pathophysiology and natural history of disease to the diagnosis and management of the common conditions seen in the department.

  6. Building a positive, healing relationship with patients

  7. Identify issues related to the cost-effectiveness of diagnostic evaluations and management options: important in our setup.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Mark Thomas, New York Universtiy - Dental, Indonesia

I gained so much experience and confidence after working with EI. Managed to rotate in all departments ranging from Oral Surgery to Endodontic, Prosthodontics to Pediatric Dentistry.

Mary Fields, University of Southampton - Midwifery, Kenya

Elective International has a great program in Kenya, hands down. I wasn’t expecting to get nearly as much work as I did but was in for a shock.  The midwifery program exposed me to so much I wouldn’t have learned if I hadn’t chosen Kenya as an elective destination.

Anne Riordan, University of Dublin - Medicine Elective

The EI staff is a friendly and supportive bunch who do a first-rate job of making sure people like myself who don’t travel a lot feel right at home.
